If you’ve ever noticed your gecko looking a bit “dusty” or seen your snake’s eyes turn a ghostly, milky blue, you’ve witnessed the start of one of nature’s most fascinating biological “makeovers.” This process, scientifically known as ecdysis, is a vital cycle that keeps your reptile healthy, growing, and vibrant.
But why exactly do they do it, and what should you do if the process doesn’t go smoothly? Let’s dive into the science of the shed!
Why Reptiles Need to Shed
Unlike humans, who lose tiny, invisible skin cells every single day, reptiles have a much more dramatic way of refreshing their appearance.
A reptile’s skin is covered in scales made of keratin—the same tough protein found in your fingernails and hair. While this skin is excellent for protection and preventing water loss, it has one major flaw: it doesn’t stretch. Think of a reptile’s skin like a child’s t-shirt. As the child grows, the shirt stays the same size. Eventually, they have to “size up” to a new shirt. Reptiles shed to literally step out of an old, tight skin to reveal a larger, more flexible one underneath.
Parasite and Injury Management
Shedding is also a form of “deep cleaning.” Ecdysis (shedding) helps physically remove external parasites like mites or ticks that may be clinging to the old scales. Minor skin injuries or worn-out scales are replaced with a fresh, healthy layer, almost like hitting a “reset button” for their skin.
Boosting UV Absorption
Fresh skin is more efficient at absorbing UV rays. This is crucial because UV light allows reptiles to synthesize Vitamin D3, which they need to process calcium and maintain strong bones. In some species, a fresh shed even improves UV-reflective coloration used for social communication and attracting mates.
The Shedding Process
Shedding doesn’t happen all at once; it follows a predictable timeline.
Pre-Shedding
Pre-Shedding, or the “blue” phase, is the very start of your reptile’s process of shedding. Before the skin actually peels, you’ll notice a few tell-tale signs:
- Dull Color
- The skin will lose its luster and look grey or “ashy.”
- Cloudy Eyes
- Often called “going into blue,” a lubricating lymph fluid builds up between the old and new skin, making the eye caps (spectacles) look milky or opaque.
- Behavioral Changes
- Your pet might become more irritable, hide more often, and lose their appetite.
The Shedding Stage
Once the new skin is ready, the fluid clears and the reptile begins the physical work.
- Friction
- They rub their nose and face against rough surfaces like rocks or branches to create a tear. This is one of the reason we recommend our keepers to use textured hides like Buddha Nuts!
- The Peeling
- Snakes often crawl out of their skin in one long, “sock-like” piece, while lizards and geckos typically shed in smaller patches.
- Nutrient Recycling
- Don’t be surprised if your gecko eats its old skin! This is a natural way to recycle nutrients and hide their scent or existence from predators.
Stuck Shed
Sometimes, the old skin doesn’t come off completely. This is called dysecdysis or “stuck” shed.
Common Culprits
- Low Humidity
- The #1 cause. If the air is too dry, the skin becomes brittle and sticks to the new layer.
- Dehydration
- A reptile that isn’t drinking enough lacks the internal fluids needed to lubricate the shed.
- Nutritional Issues
- Deficiencies in Vitamin A can lead to chronic shedding problems.
- Intelligence
- Just like other animals, some reptiles can be smarter than others. Every once in a while, we find a gecko that will just not get the hang of the shedding process and needs some extra assistance.
Pay close attention to toes, tail tips, and eye caps. Stuck skin in these areas can act like a tourniquet, cutting off circulation and potentially leading to the loss of a digit or tip of the tail.
How to Prevent it
- Humidity Boost
- Increase the humidity in the enclosure by misting and/or adding a water bowl.
- Humid Hide
- Provide a box or hide filled with damp sphagnum or pillow moss where they can soak in a high-humidity microclimate.
- Electrolyte Soaks
- When we have a “frequent flier” in the stuck shed department, I like to prep them with an electrolyte soak when they first go into the pre-shedding phase. This helps boost their overall skin moisture and helps them to absorb more nutrients and can prevent appetite loss. We use the Lugarti Electrolyte Soak and the Zoo Med Electrolyte Soak and find they’re both great choices!
What to do About it
- Make a “Sauna”
- Find a small container with a lid (use your take home container if you have a gecko from us!), line the bottom with a paper towel or napkin, and get it as damp and humid as possible without there being standing water. Sit your reptile inside for 20-30 minutes and this softens the stuck shed enough that most reptiles can get it off on their own.
- Gentle Assistance
- After trying the sauna method, if your reptile still has stuck shed remaining, we recommend using Q-Tips or cotton swabs and gently rubbing on the stuck shed to get it to come off. You can also use the Lugarti Shedding Spray as an additional lubrication and moisturizer for the skin and continue rubbing with the swabs.
Shedding is a window into your reptile’s overall health. A clean, complete shed is a great sign that your husbandry is on point. By providing the right humidity, rough textures, and a proper diet, you’re helping your pet thrive in their “new skin” – and you know they’re growing too!
