As of December 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded its investigation into a significant multistate outbreak of Salmonella Cotham infections linked to pet bearded dragons, highlighting the importance of understanding and mitigating these risks when keeping one in your home[24, 27]. This outbreak, resulting in 20 confirmed cases across 14 states, nine hospitalizations, and tragically one death in Kentucky, underscores the need for informed decision-making when you’re looking for your perfect pet and how to implement rigorous safety protocols [24].

This blog post will delve into the details of the 2025 outbreak, explain why bearded dragons are more prone to Salmonella transmission, provide you with actionable steps to minimize exposure if you’re interested in keeping one as a pet, and suggest a safer reptile alternative for families with young children, immunocompromised individuals, or just those looking for an easier to keep pet for their new family member. Understanding the 2025 Bearded Dragon Salmonella Outbreak

The CDC’s investigation revealed that the outbreak spanned from May to December 2025, with documented illnesses beginning as early as May 26th and continuing through October 4th [1, 27, 28]. The source was traced back to pet bearded dragons through the CDC’s PulseNet system, which identified a cluster of Salmonella Cotham infections with a unique DNA fingerprint [27].

What’s particularly concerning is the demographic profile of those affected. The median age of infected individuals was just two years old, with a staggering 53% of cases occurring in children under five [27]. This highlights the vulnerability of young children to Salmonella infections from bearded dragons. While the age range extended to 74 years, the data clearly indicates that young children are at the highest risk [27].

Laboratory confirmation solidified the link between bearded dragons and the outbreak. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis revealed that the Salmonella Cotham bacteria isolated from a sick person’s bearded dragon in Ohio was genetically closely related to the bacteria recovered from people in the outbreak [27, 36]. Further, this strain was genetically similar to those that caused other documented outbreaks from bearded dragons in 2024 and from 2012 through 2014, indicating a persistent issue within commercial bearded dragon populations [27, 36]. The traceback investigation pointed to multiple retail locations as sources, suggesting a widespread distribution of infected animals through commercial pet supply channels [27, 36].

The clinical severity of the outbreak was also notable. Of the 14 people with available hospitalization information, six individuals (43%) required hospitalization for their Salmonella infections [27, 36]. This hospitalization rate is higher than what is typically seen with other sources of Salmonella infection, highlighting the virulence of the strains carried by bearded dragons. The tragic death in Kentucky underscores the potential for severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations [33].

Why Bearded Dragons Are Particularly High-Risk Salmonella Carriers

Unlike humans, bearded dragons are often asymptomatic carriers of Salmonella bacteria [9, 13]. This means they can harbor the bacteria in their intestinal tracts without showing any signs of illness. Salmonella is often a normal part of their gut flora [9]. This is a crucial distinction because it means that a seemingly healthy bearded dragon can still pose a significant risk.

Studies have shown that a substantial proportion of pet reptiles test positive for Salmonella. A study published in Eastern Spain found that 48% of reptiles carried Salmonella, with rates as high as 89% in pet shops where reptiles were cohabitating and biosecurity protocols were either lacking or entirely unused[3]. Meta-analyses estimate the overall pooled prevalence of Salmonella in reptiles to be around 30.4% globally, with lizards showing a prevalence of 33.6% [29, 42].

The asymptomatic nature of Salmonella colonization in bearded dragons makes it difficult to identify risk through observation alone [4, 7, 10, 17]. A bearded dragon can appear perfectly healthy while still shedding Salmonella bacteria. Even fecal testing may not always detect the bacteria, as shedding can be intermittent [8, 34].

Once a bearded dragon is colonized with Salmonella, it is likely to remain a carrier for life [9, 13]. Antibiotic treatment is not recommended and may even be harmful [9, 13]. Therefore, it’s essential to assume that any bearded dragon carries Salmonella and requires lifelong precautions.

Bearded dragons are also among the most popular pet reptile species, increasing the likelihood of Salmonella-related illnesses in humans [25, 31]. Their docile temperament and manageable size make them attractive to families, but this popularity also creates a convergence of high-risk animals with vulnerable populations [12, 25]. Additionally, the typical handling of bearded dragons in captivity leads individuals to handle them near their faces and in otherwise generally difficult to sanitize areas like the neck and shoulders.

Compared to other reptiles, snakes exhibit the highest overall Salmonella prevalence at 63.1%, while turtles and crocodiles show lower rates [29], even though these are typically associated more closely with the bacteria. However, bearded dragons have become increasingly associated with Salmonella infections in recent years [31, 45]. The 2012-2014 Salmonella Cotham outbreak linked to bearded dragons involved 160 patients across 35 states [12]. With consistent outbreaks and more consistent transmission methods, it goes to show that prevalence isn’t the only thing to be worried about when looking at a reptile for yourself.

Transmission Mechanisms and Risk Factors for Salmonella Transmission

Salmonella spreads primarily through the fecal matter of infected animals [7, 8, 34]. For transmission to occur, the bacteria must be ingested. This can happen through direct contact with feces or contaminated surfaces, or indirectly through contaminated clothing, hands, or water sources [7, 10, 15, 16, 18, 34, 37, 40].

Allowing bearded dragons to roam freely throughout homes significantly increases the risk of contamination [7, 10, 16, 37]. Cross-contamination can occur when reptile-associated items come into contact with food preparation areas [7, 16, 37]. Even indirect contact with caregivers who handle bearded dragons can lead to transmission, as seen in the 2024 outbreak investigation [25, 57]. Young children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable to Salmonella infection [16, 30, 37, 40]. Children’s developing immune systems and hygiene habits (or lack thereof!) make them more susceptible [30, 43].

Household practices such as poor enclosure sanitation, inadequate hand washing, and crowded housing conditions also increase the risk of transmission [3, 8, 13, 14, 35, 53]. Stress in bearded dragons due to inadequate husbandry has been shown to also further increase Salmonella shedding [9, 13, 21, 43].

How can you prevent Salmonella transmission?

To minimize the risk of Salmonella transmission, follow these comprehensive prevention and safety protocols as provided by the CDC:

  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds immediately after any contact with bearded dragons or their environment [7, 10, 15, 16, 37, 40, 41].
  • Enclosure Management: House bearded dragons in secure enclosures to prevent them from roaming freely [7, 10, 16, 37, 40, 41]. Clean enclosures regularly, using appropriate disinfectants [7, 8, 14, 37, 40].
  • Food Preparation: Keep bearded dragons and their equipment completely separate from kitchens and food preparation areas [7, 10, 16, 37, 40, 41].
  • Restricting Children’s Contact: Children under five should avoid contact with bearded dragons [6, 7, 10, 16, 30, 37, 40, 41]. Supervise older children closely during interactions [7, 10, 16, 37, 40, 41].
  • Exclusion of High-Risk Populations: Reptiles should not be kept in households with young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals [6, 7, 10, 16, 37, 40, 41].

A Safer Alternative: Consider a Crested Gecko

If you’re seeking a reptile pet that poses a lower Salmonella risk and is easier to care for, consider a Crested Gecko. While all reptiles can potentially carry Salmonella, Crested Geckos are generally considered safer due to their lower prevalence rates, different handling requirements, and their primarily frugivorous, sterile-packaged diet [20, 21, 23]. They don’t require live insects as a food source, significantly reducing the risk of Salmonella contamination [48, 49, 51]. Even better? Their smaller size and arboreal nature mean they require less space than bearded dragons [48, 49, 51].
