These fascinating creatures come with a few potential challenges, and one of the most persistent is dealing with mites. It’s 2026, and reptile keepers are still battling these tiny parasites. Why do some reptiles seem to attract mites while others remain unaffected? This guide dives deep into the world of reptile mites, exploring the reasons behind infestations and offering you practical solutions to keep your scaled companions healthy and mite-free. Whether you’re a seasoned herpetoculturist or a first-time keeper, understanding the factors that contribute to mite infestations is crucial for maintaining a thriving (and parasite free!) reptile collection.
The Biological Foundations of Reptile Mite Parasitism
The world of mites that can affect your reptiles is incredibly diverse. Over 400 species of ectoparasitic mites and ticks specifically target reptiles worldwide [4]. These tiny creatures belong to different orders and families, each with its own unique adaptations for parasitizing reptiles.

One of the most common and troublesome species in captive reptile collections is Ophionyssus natricis, or the snake mite [9][10]. This pest has spread globally through the reptile trade and can even be found in wild populations in places like Australia [32]. Other common culprits include the lizard mite (Hirstiella trombidiiformis), known for its reddish color and preference for lizards, and chigger mites (Trombiculidae), whose larval stages are parasitic [10][33]. For those of you who live in the Southern United States, you’ve almost definitely encountered a chigger mite yourself, and know how annoying they can be!
A 2014 study of Moroccan lizards revealed that 22.4% of the lizard population was infested with mites [4]. Trombiculid mites were the most prevalent, affecting 17.2% of the lizards, followed by Pterygosomatidae (4.1%), Ixodidae ticks (1.5%), and Macronyssidae mites (0.4%) [4]. These kinds of studies help you to understand the variety of mites that can affect reptiles, depending on their environment.
The Evolutionary Perspective: Host-Parasite Coevolution and Specificity
But why do certain mites target reptiles while others prefer mammals or birds? The answer lies in coevolution and host specificity. Mites and reptiles have evolved together over millions of years, with parasites adapting to specific hosts. Research has shown that mite morphology can even be influenced by the host, suggesting a close relationship between the two [11].

Parasites evolve in response to their hosts’ defenses, leading to increased specialization. Snake mites, for example, have developed thermal preferences almost identical to those of their reptile hosts, thriving at 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit with 70-90% humidity [10]. This remarkable adaptation demonstrates the power of coevolution, and the reasons that certain species of reptiles are more prone to mites, but also why certain mites only infest specific species.
Environmental and Husbandry Factors Contributing to Mite Infestations
Mite infestations are often more severe in captivity than in the wild. Wild reptiles have natural behaviors and physiological mechanisms for managing parasite loads, such as shedding their skin (ecdysis) to remove external parasites [12][36]. Even though reptiles in captivity still shed, they aren’t able to leave it in a completely separate location and then move on, they’re stuck in a closed environment with their shed! In the wild, they’re also able to disperse across the landscape, reducing the concentration of parasites that they’re exposed to for extended periods of time [9].
In contrast, captive environments provide ideal conditions for mite reproduction. Stable temperatures, appropriate humidity, and confined spaces create a perfect microhabitat for mites to thrive [47]. Female snake mites can even reproduce asexually/parthenogenically, meaning a single mite can start an entire infestation [38]. This, combined with the favorable conditions of captivity, allows mite populations to explode within weeks.
Climate as a Primary Driver of Mite Distribution and Prevalence
Climate plays a significant role in mite prevalence. A study of museum specimens from Israel and the Palestinian territories found that mite prevalence decreased 3.9-fold from Mediterranean climate zones to desert-edge regions [31]. Mediterranean areas, with higher humidity and moderate temperatures, had a mite prevalence of 4.3%, while desert-edge environments had only 1.1% [31].
This difference is due to the physiological constraints of mites. Mite eggs and larvae are highly susceptible to desiccation, with high mortality rates at humidity levels below 75% [32]. The stable, warm, and humid conditions typically maintained in reptile enclosures inadvertently create an ideal environment for mite reproduction.

Stress, Immune Suppression, and Disease Susceptibility
Stress and immune suppression can also contribute to mite infestations. Reptiles have immune systems that can be weakened by improper environmental conditions, inadequate space, poor nutrition, and/or the stress of captivity itself [2]. In healthy reptiles, parasites like pinworms and coccidia may exist as relatively harmless cohabitants [2]. However, stress-induced immunosuppression can disrupt this balance, leading to parasitic diseases [2]. Similarly, poor husbandry practices create conditions that allow mite populations to thrive.
How do you get mites?
The most common way mites enter reptile collections is through the introduction of parasitized animals that haven’t been properly quarantined [2][19][38][41]. Mites can be difficult to detect, especially in low numbers, hiding in skin folds, scale edges, and around the eyes [9]. We recommend a quarantine period of at least 90 days for captive-bred reptiles and up to six months for wild-caught specimens [19][20]. During this time, visual inspections should be performed regularly, and a reptile veterinarian should examine the animal if possible [19][41].
Mites are also commonly introduced through contaminated equipment, substrate, enclosures and/or food items. Most mites can survive off-host for up to a month, waiting for a suitable host [9]. Feeder rodents and contaminated cage substrates can also be sources of mites [45][38]. Human-mediated dispersal, such as on clothing or hands after visiting reptile expos, is another potential route of transmission [19][22][38][41]. It’s one of the reasons we recommend handling animals at shows with care, and ensuring you properly sanitize afterwards!
The Explosive Population Growth Dynamics of Snake Mites
Snake mites are notorious for their rapid population growth. The entire life cycle of Ophionyssus natricis can be completed in as little as seven to 19 days, depending on temperature and humidity [9][10][12]. At optimal temperatures, eggs hatch in just 40 to 50 hours [47]. A single female mite can produce up to 90 eggs in her initial laying cycle and continue to lay 60 to 80 additional eggs throughout her lifetime, even without fertilization [9][12]. This means that a single mite can theoretically establish a population of millions within weeks [38].
How can mites hurt my reptile?
Heavy mite infestations can have severe health consequences for reptiles. Mites feed on blood, and severe infestations can cause anemia, leading to lethargy, weakness, and even death [5][43][54]. Mites also cause irritation and inflammation of the skin, leading to dermatitis and potentially secondary bacterial or fungal infections [14][49][51]. Infested reptiles may also experience dysecdysis, or abnormal shedding [5][9][12][40].

Behavioral changes are also common, including increased soaking behavior, excessive rubbing and scratching, and lethargy [7][14][38][41]. Loss of appetite and weight loss are also signs of significant mite burden [7][14][33].
Vector-Borne Diseases and Systemic Pathogens Transmitted by Mites
Mites can also transmit diseases. Snake mites have been identified as mechanical carriers for Aeromonas hydrophila, a bacterium that can cause hemorrhagic septicemia in reptiles [44]. Ticks and mites can also carry Rickettsia bacteria, which have zoonotic potential [1]. There’s also evidence suggesting that mites may play a role in the transmission of inclusion body disease (IBD), a fatal viral infection in boid snakes [20][23][24].

How do we prevent mite infestations?
Quarantine is the most effective way to prevent mite infestations. Newly acquired reptiles should be quarantined in a separate room for at least 90 days [19][20][41]. Use minimalist enclosures with disposable substrates to easily monitor for mites [19]. It’s also incredibly important to implement strict biosecurity measures, such as using dedicated equipment and practicing increased hand hygiene [19][22][41]. While maintaining appropriate environmental conditions for your reptile is the priority, you can also make the environment less favorable for mites. Keep temperatures at the lower end of the species’ preferred range, if possible, to slow mite reproduction [51]. Regular cleaning and removal of fecal material can also help reduce mite populations [41][43]. Here at Gecko Fancy, we recommend using a specialized cleaning product like Lugarti’s Terrarium Cleaner.
Hand Hygiene and Human Transmission Prevention
Always wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer before and after handling reptiles or interacting with their enclosures [19][38][41]. When visiting reptile expos or other collections, take precautions to avoid bringing mites home on your clothing or shoes [19][38]. Disinfect secondhand equipment and freeze substrate before use [38][41].
How do you get rid of mites?
Several pharmaceutical options are available for treating mite infestations. Permethrin is a widely used treatment, but it must be used with caution to avoid toxicity [5][16][54]. Ivermectin is another effective drug, but it is toxic to certain reptile species [5][13][16][41]. Pyrethroids can be applied as sprays, but should be rinsed off after a brief exposure to minimize toxicity [14][54]. While most of the gecko species we keep at Gecko Fancy don’t really carry mites, for any of the species that do, or when we pick up the occasional snake or lizard, we use the Lugarti Natural Mite Spray for the animal and the Nature Zone Mite Guard powder for the habitats!
Environmental Treatment and Decontamination Protocols
Environmental treatment is crucial for eliminating mite populations. Discard disposable items and soak non-porous items in a dilute bleach solution [14][19][54]. Thoroughly clean and disinfect the enclosure, paying attention to cracks and crevices [14][19][54]. Repeat treatments at seven to ten-day intervals to target emerging generations of mites [14][37][38][51][54].
Mite infestations are a common challenge in reptile keeping, but with a thorough understanding of the factors that contribute to them and the strategies available for prevention and treatment, you can keep your reptiles healthy and mite-free. Remember, quarantine is your first line of defense, and proper husbandry practices are essential for creating an environment that is less favorable for mites. If you suspect your reptile has mites, consult with a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine for diagnosis and treatment options and speak to the breeder about a potential infestation in their colonies.
